Wyomissing defeats West Perry to win fourth straight District 3 Class 3A football title

Wyomissing made history on Saturday, as the top-seeded Spartans defeated No. 3 seed West Perry 63-7 to claim the program’s fourth straight District 3 Class 3A championship and become the first team from Berks to win four straight district football championships.

To put the icing on the cake, Wyomissing coach Bob Wolfrum became the winningest coach in District 3 history with the victory.

“It feels great,” senior Charlie McIntyre said. “Every year you want to see a district title and go to (the) state playoffs and it’s an amazing feeling again. With coach Wolfrum, it’s great to play behind him and it’s all for him. He’s a great coach.”

Wolfrum’s all-time record is 349-86-1 and he has led the Spartans to 11 district titles and one state championship in his 33 years at the helm. He will try to add another win to his record when Wyomissing travels to Danville, the District 4 champion, on Friday at 7:30 for a PIAA quarterfinal.

“It feels old,” Wolfrum said on his achievement. “You got to be old to get that many wins.”

The Spartans’ (12-0) 63 points tops the record for most points scored in a District 3 Class 3A championship, which they set last year with a 55-13 win over Boiling Springs.

Wyomissing was propelled to victory by their dominant rushing attack that scored nine touchdowns and recorded 623 rushing yards on 41 carries. The Spartans’ defense, which came in allowing a District 3-low 7.5 points per game, shut down the Mustangs, who came in averaging 43.5 points per game.

McIntyre ran the ball five times for a game-high 165 yards and scored two touchdowns on runs of 73 and 63 yards. Senior Matthew Kramer ran 14 times for 151 yards and three touchdowns, and senior Drew Eisenhower ran for 84 yards and a touchdown on six carries.

Together, the three-man rushing core compiled 400 rushing yards behind a dominant offensive line led by Penn State commit J’Ven Williams.

“They’re not running anywhere unless we get the holes,” Wolfrum said. “The linemen did a great job blocking and there were times when there weren’t great holes and the backs actually made some great cuts, and just beat people around the corner. I thought we did that quite a few times today.”

Though the win looked dominant on paper, West Perry came out with the hotter hand as the Mustangs (11-2) scored on a 46-yard touchdown pass from Marcus Quaker to Ian Goodling to complete an 8-play, 70-yard opening drive.

Wyomissing would respond quickly in just two plays on the ensuing drive, as McIntyre found a hole up the middle and broke away for a 73-yard rushing touchdown to tie the game.

After a combined sack from Williams and Ryker Jones stopped West Perry on its next drive, the Spartans completed a 10-play, 48-yard scoring drive with a 4-yard rushing touchdown run by Kramer to take a 14-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

“I think we all came in with the mindset that this team (West Perry) is going to make plays,” Drew Eisnehower said. “This is going to be a big play team and they have a lot of speed, and I think we all did our job really well tonight. They scored right away, but we talked about what we had to do, and we were just gonna do it.

“We made sure we communicated better; made sure we were all going the same way on defense. They had a great drive, great pass, great catch, and we just did our assignments the rest of the game and it worked.”

The Wyomissing defense continued to tighten up, and a missed 34-yard field goal by the Mustangs early in the second quarter gave the Spartans all the momentum they needed to run away with the score.

A 63-yard touchdown run by Kramer on the next drive gave the Spartans a two-touchdown lead and, after forcing another West Perry three-and-out, Kramer capped off a 3-play, 50-yard drive with an 18-yard touchdown run.

With a 28-7 lead midway through the second, Ethan Brower intercepted Quaker at the Wyomissing 28-yard line and returned it to the 43-yard line.

The play seemed to set off a series of turnovers, as Kramer fumbled and gave it back to the Mustangs just a few plays later.

Then, the Spartans would force a West Perry fumble and recover it, only to lose possession again on the first play of the next drive as McIntyre fumbled during the handoff exchange.

The Spartans had the last laugh of the half, however, as Brower came up big for Wyomissing again and delivered a heavy hit to force another West Perry fumble. Drew Eisenhower closed out a chaotic first half with an 11-yard touchdown run to give the Spartans a 35-7 lead.

“We were just pumped up today,” Brower said. “Obviously, it’s a championship game and we just practiced all week and the practice paid off, and I just went out and did my job. We knew that they were a big power I team, so that means they’ll run it up the middle. So we played our defense to stop their run inside and then our pass defense shut them down, that was really all they had going for them in the beginning.”

Wyomissing continued to pile it on in the second half.

Jones scored a 41-yard rushing touchdown with 8:34 to go in the third quarter, then shortly after, McIntyre followed Williams on a sweep to the right side that led to a 63-yard touchdown to make it 49-7 with 6:09 left in the third.

Freshmen Chase Eisenhower had a 44-yard gain that set up a 1-yard touchdown run by William Delp with 10:03 to go in the fourth.

Junior Jeremiah Diaz broke free for an 80-yard rushing touchdown with 3:48 left in the game to close out the scoring at 63-7. Kicker Ian Levering was a perfect 7-of-7 on extra point attempts.

Heading into the state playoffs, McIntyre said he knows the history between the Spartans and Danville will play a factor, but Wyomissing can get the job done if it operates how it has been all season long.

“We’ll just keep practicing the way we’ve been,” McIntyre said. “You can’t change too much, just keep playing how we’ve been playing. We played them two years ago, we won that game to get the state championship and they’re gonna have some revenge from that so we’re gonna have a target on our back. So at that game, if we play how we always play I think we’ll do pretty well.”
