Wyomissing football dominates Fleetwood to remain undefeated

Wyomissing dominated the line of scrimmage Friday night at Fleetwood.

With a strong rushing attack and stifling defense, the Spartans ran for six touchdowns and allowed just five first downs in a 48-7 win over the Tigers.

With the win, Wyomissing improved to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in Section 2 of the Berks Football League.

“We did a great job tonight,” Spartans coach Bob Wolfrum said. “I thought we played very well, but with enthusiasm, too, which we lacked the last couple of weeks.”

Wyomissing jumped out to an early 14-0 lead and never looked back, extending its lead to 35-0 by halftime. The Spartans recorded 19 first downs in the contest

Wyomissing used 10 different ball-carriers, who collectively ran for 341 yards and 18 first downs. Amory Thompson led the way with 88 yards, including a 48-yard touchdown run.

Drew Eisenhower ran for 74 yards and a touchdown and Tommy Grabowski had 47 yards and a pair of scores. The Spartans ran the ball effectively throughout the night, and Wolfrum was pleased by the number of backs, especially young players, who recorded productive carries.

“There’s a lot of people that got to carry the ball a little bit tonight,” Wolfrum said. “It’s really important. That’s how you keep your program going.”

The Fleetwood offense struggled for much of the game, except for a pair of big passing plays in the third quarter. Quarterback Tanner Maddocks found wide receiver Mason Musitano on completions of 39 and 31 yards, the latter of which went for a touchdown to give Fleetwood its lone score.

Maddocks threw for 74 yards and also ran for 20, but the Wyomissing defensive front found its way into the backfield on nearly every play. The Tigers struggled to move the ball, and they were unable to convert on a pair of fourth-down attempts.

“Our defense has done a great job all year,” Wolfrum said. “They really put a lot of pressure on that quarterback. He had to get rid of it quickly, and they didn’t get much going offensively.”
