The Gov. Mifflin Holiday Wrestling Invitational concluded on Friday at the Gov. Mifflin Intermediate School with two Berks wrestlers winning first-place medals and another finishing second.
Wyomissing’s Caleb Brewer and Brandywine Heights’ Jacob Deysher earned gold, while Oley Valley’s Chase Parisian won a silver.
In the 285-pound final, Brewer defeated Justis Troutman of Tri-Valley 3-1. The final match of the night went into an overtime period tied at 1-1, and in front of a rowdy crowd cheering him on, Brewer delivered a decisive takedown to win it.
“I was tied up with him, I looked at all the people around me and I was like, ‘I’m not losing in front of all these people,’ ” Brewer said, “and I could tell he was getting tired too, so I took that final shot and that’s how it happened.”
Brewer (3-0) defeated Josiah Boyer of Cocalico by a fall in 1:48 in the semifinals. After finishing third in the event last year, Brewer said he was happy to bring the gold home for not only himself, but his friends, family and coaches, as well.
“It’s great to have my friends and family supporting me here,” Brewer said. “But you know, I really wanted to get first place in the tournament and my coach said we haven’t had a champion in a little bit. So I wanted to make them proud.”
Looking ahead to the remainder of the season, Brewer said his goal is to win a medal at states.
“This was a first little step up to a couple big steps,” Brewer said. “I want to place in states. I want to succeed on the state level and I want to get a state medal, maybe even win one, but we’ll see then.”
In 121-pound final, Deysher defeated Souderton’s Charlie Arabone of Souderton 9-0.
After finishing fourth at last year’s tournament, Deysher said he felt confident heading into this year’s event.
“I felt comfortable the entire time,” Deysher said. “My first few matches, I didn’t have major decisions, but I won a lot. So I felt confident that I was going to win this match.”
Deysher, who has a 44-14 overall record in his career, had two takedowns in the final match as well as a near fall and reversal. He said he believed the key to his success was having a healthy mentality.
“I try to just make sure to stay hydrated and just have that mentality that you’re gonna go out there and win,” Deysher said.
Deysher defeated Kale Quigley of Susquenita 4-3 in the semifinals.
At 107, Parisan pinned Tripp Gannon of Cape Henlopen, Del., in 1:09 in the quarterfinals, then defeated Richard Goerlach of Upper Darby by fall in 1:43 in the semis.
Parisan fell to Ben Godshall of Upper Perkiomen 7-6 decision in the final. He finished fourth in the event a year ago and said that going against quality competition in the tournament will help him the rest of the season.
“I thought I had a pretty good first day (of the tournament) and the first match today, but I definitely could have taken more shots,” Parisan said. “I think in this last match, losing by one point, it always hurts, but I know what I can do to improve and pick out my mistakes.
“Taking high places gives me confidence and I always like having harder competition. So I’m gonna look where I’m at and what I need to improve on.”
Jayleah Pletz of Gov. Mifflin finished in eighth place at 107. Gov. Mifflin finished with the highest team score of all Berks schools in attendance with 104 points.
Other medal winners included: Vincent Dick of Oley Valley, seventh place at 114; Dominic Reifsnyder of Oley Valley, seventh at 127; Joshua Sterner of Brandywine Heights, third at 133; Garrett Fronheiser of Oley Valley, eighth place at 133; Andrew Huesgen of Gov. Mifflin, sixth at 145; and Wyatt Bierman of Gov. Mifflin, third at 285.
