2 candidates seeking spot as Tulpehocken Township supervisor

Two candidates are competing this November for a spot on the Tulpehocken Township Board of Supervisors.

Democrat Dennis G. Royer and Republican Harry J. Reinhold will face each other on the ballot. The winner will serve a six year term as supervisor.

We asked the candidates to respond to two questions:

Question 1: Why do you believe you are the right person for this position?

Question 2: What are the most important issues facing the township right now, and how do you plan to address them?

Dennis G. Royer, 66.

Party: Democrat.

Background: Royer is a lifelong resident of Tulpehocken Township, whose family has lived there for several generations. He is a graduate of Tulpehocken High School, Penn State University and the Pennsylvania State Police Academy. He retired as a police officer in South Lebanon Township in 2012. He is also a former assistant fire chief with Keystone Fire Company in Rehrersburg and former emergency medical technician for Bethel Ambulance for 15 years.

Response 1: I have worked for municipal governments for 34 years. I am a retired police officer and can devote my time and effort to representing and serving our citizens. I have worked closely with township administrations and road crews as a township police officer. I have negotiated police contracts and understand both management and employee issues. I have attended township meetings for years and am aware of the current issues.

Response 2: At this time there is a lack of management when the township is working with hired attorneys and engineering firms. Often times, there are unnecessary fees and delays that are never questioned. I intend to add more oversight and not just accept plans and information without careful review. All township departments should be reviewed to keep them efficient and to plan for future needs to better serve our citizens.

Harry J. Reinhold

Party: Republican.

Reinhold did not provide responses.
