Stout defense and a strong rushing attack propelled Widener to a 21-7 victory over Albright on Saturday in a Middle Atlantic Conference game on Homecoming at Shirk Stadium.
The Pride (2-0, 4-0) held the Lions (1-1, 2-2) to just 63 yards passing. Albright quarterback Todd Shelley completed 7 of 21 passes and was sacked three times.
Running back Isaiah Shockley scored Albright’s lone touchdown. He finished with 61 yards on 14 carries.
Widener ran for 232 yards and three touchdowns. Running back Shawn Thompson had 101 yards and a score on 19 carries.
The Pride scored two touchdowns in the first half before the Lions responded in the third quarter to cut it to 13-7. However, Widener extended its lead with a touchdown and successful two-point conversion late in the third.
Wilkes 23, Alvernia 0: At Wilkes-Barre, Alvernia committed five turnovers — including an interception that was returned 42 yards for a touchdown — and was shut out by Wilkes in a Middle Atlantic Conference game.
The Colonels (2-0, 3-0) forced four interceptions, recovered a Golden Wolves’ fumble and recorded three sacks. Alvernia (0-2, 0-4) was held to just 84 passing yards.
Wilkes led 3-0 at halftime before Nate Whitaker opened the second half with a 91-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. The Colonels scored two more times in the third quarter, which was capped by the pick-six and gave Wilkes a 23-0 lead.
Alvernia running back Malcolm Carey finished with 154 rushing yards on just 15 carries. His longest run went for 57 yards.
