Albright men open season with win in college basketball, while Alvernia falls in a tip-off tournament title game

Sidney Brown scored 32 points to lead Albright to a season-opening 87-83 win over Immaculata in a non-conference game Sunday at Bollman Center.

The Lions led by 12 with 5:22 left, but the Mighty Macs went on a 16-4 run to tie at 82-82 with 1:17 left.

Sean Miller made a layup to give Albright the lead with 1:04 left. After Immaculata missed and got the offensive rebound, Brown came up with a steal and made two foul shots with 31 seconds left.

Corey Simmons had 13 points and Troy Smoot 12 for the Lions.

St. Joseph (Conn.) 76, Alvernia 55: At West Hartford, Conn., Alvernia (1-1) shot just 30% from the field in falling to St. Joseph (2-0) in the championship game of the USJ Tip-Off Tournament.

The Blue Jays, coached by former UConn coach Jim Calhhoun, were ranked ninth in the d3hoops.com preseason poll. They shot 54.5% from the field.

Jakob Kelly scored 19 points to lead Alvernia. Malik Green had 14 points and Keon Taylor 10.

The Golden Wolves defeated New Jersey City 70-60 in Saturday’s game. Taylor had 21 points, Green 19 and Avery Walker 10.

Women

Minot State 72, Kutztown 67: Saturday at Billings, Mont., Casey Remolde had 24 points and eight rebounds for the Golden Bears (1-1) in a loss at the D2CAA Tipoff Classic at the Trailhead.

Bryn Athyn 68, Penn State Berks 59: Saturday at Bryn Athyn, Katie Armstrong had 15 points, 17 rebounds, six assists, three steals and one blocked shot for the Nittany Lions in the season-opening loss.
