Alvernia men fall to Hood, but still get top seed in MAC Commonwealth men’s basketball playoffs

Alvernia lost 80-68 to Hood in a MAC Commonwealth men’s basketball regular-season finale Saturday at Frederick, Md., but still ended up as the top seed in the upcoming conference playoffs.

The Golden Wolves (12-4, 18-7) received help from York College, which beat Widener 78-64 Saturday at Chester to keep the Pride from taking over the top spot in the standings.

Alvernia will open the MAC Commonwealth playoffs with a semifinal game at home Wednesday, time to be announced, against the winner of Monday’s game between No. 4 Eastern and No. 5 York.

Widener will host No. 3 Hood in the other semifinal Wednesday,

The final is Saturday, Feb. 25, at the highest remaining seed.

In Saturday’s game, Alvernia shot just 32.4% from the field.

Hood (10-6, 16-9) used a 13-0 run to turn a 46-44 lead with 15:05 left into a 59-44 lead with 10:25 left. The Golden Wolves got no closer than seven the rest of the way.

Malik Green led Alvernia with 26 points and nine rebounds. Robert Mullan had 11 points.

Trumaine Strickland had 15 points to lead Hood.

Kutztown 81, Mansfield 69: Saturday at Keystone Arena, Jalen Bryant scored 22 points and Robert Tucker had 20 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Golden Bears (8-12, 9-17) over the Mountaineers (5-16, 6-19) in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East game.

Kutztown (8-12, 9-17) won its fourth straight, taking control with a 15-2 run that turned a 28-23 deficit with 6:01 left in the first half into a 38-30 lead with 1:42 left in the half.

Mansfield got within five early in the second half, but that was it. KU led by as many as 18.

Reading High grad Wesley Butler had 15 points and Kyree Generett 10 points and eight assists for the Golden Bears.

Scott Woodring led the Mountaineers with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Penn State Harrisburg 93, Penn State Berks 65: Saturday at Middletown, Jeff Lorah scored 22 points and Isaiah Cotten had 12 as Penn State Berks (5-11, 7-16) lost to Penn State Harrisburg (12-4, 15-10) in a season-ending United East game.

On Friday, Josh Gardner had 20 points, and Lorah and Cotten each 14 as Penn State Berks lost 91-90 in overtime at home to Penn College.

Women

Kutztown 71, Mansfield 49: Saturday at Keystone Arena, Casey Remolde scored 17 points and Naia Pulliam had 15 as the Golden Bears (10-10, 12-14) beat the Mountaineers (2-19, 3-22) in the PSAC East on the day Kutztown celebrated 50 years of women’s basketball.

KU put it away in the fourth quarter by outscoring Mansfield 21-6.

The Golden Bears, who snapped a two-game losing streak, have two games remaining in the regular season — Wednesday at Bloomsburg and Feb. 25 at home vs. Shepherd — and need one win or a loss by Lock Haven to clinch a PSAC playoff berth.

Alvernia 66, Hood 48: Saturday at Frederick, Md., the Golden Wolves (11-5, 16-9) outscored the Blazers (1-15, 4-21) 44-20 in the second half, including 33-8 in the third quarter, to earn the MAC Commonwealth victory.

Alvernia trailed by 11 in the first half and 28-22 at halftime before shooting 61.9% (13-for-21) in the third quarter to take control.

Jordan Karmonick had 16 points and nine rebounds, Cathryn Kramer 11 points and 13 rebounds, and Tamia Wessels and Taliyah Malone each 10 points for the Golden Wolves.

The 11 league wins are the most for Alvernia since it joined the MAC Commonwealth in the 2009-10 season.

The Golden Wolves are the third seed in the MAC Commonwealth playoffs and will travel to second-seeded Albright for a semifinal game Wednesday, time to be announced.

Messiah is the top seed, and will host the winner of Monday’s game between No. 5 Widener and No. 4 Lebanon Valley on Wednesday in the other semifinal.

The championship game will be on Saturday, Feb. 25, at the highest remaining seed.

Penn State Harrisburg 92, Penn State Berks 47: Saturday at Middletown, Kayley Mattis scored 15 points and Hailey Miller had 10 as Penn State Berks (2-14, 2-20) ended its season with the United East loss to Penn State Harrisburg (13-3, 16-9).

Jalyn Hann had 10 rebounds for PSU Berks

On Friday, Miller had 23 points and 15 rebounds in a 63-48 home loss to Penn College.
