Alvernia University celebrates $2 million in federal funding for Pottsville CollegeTowne project

Officials from Alvernia University celebrated newly announced federal funding for the school’s Pottsville CollegeTowne project at an event Tuesday.

U.S. Rep. Dan Meuser visited the future site of the new campus at 500 Progress Ave. to present university officials with a $2 million ceremonial check. The funding is part of the recently passed $1.5 trillion federal budget.

The $6 million CollegeTowne project will create a new satellite campus in downtown Pottsville, much like the one Alvernia opened in downtown Reading this past fall. It will convert a 30,000-square-foot building that was formerly a Giant supermarket into classrooms and other educational spaces.

The facility is expected to open in the fall.
