Andy Summers, Slayer, ZZ Top among area concert highlights [Seven in Seven]

Welcome to Seven in Seven, where we look at shows coming to the region over the next week. As always, whether your musical tastes are rock ’n’ roll, jazz, heavy metal, R&B, singer-songwriter or indie, there will always be something to check out. Here are seven of the best on the docket for the week of Sept. 19.

Andy Summers — Friday at Sellersville Theater 1894

Legendary guitarist, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, and multiple Grammy-winning artist Andy Summers continues his North American run with “The Cracked Lens + A Missing String” theater tour for yet another season. The ex-Police guitarist began visiting intimate theatres in 2023 as a way to incorporate his collective works into an insightful evening spanning his career, where he plays guitar and improvises to several sequences of his photography he’s shot worldwide. He also reads excerpts from his book of short stories, “Fretted and Moaning,” while sharing insights on his music and photography, including his most recent photography book, “A Series of Glances,” and performs selections from his extensive solo catalog. The Sellersville audience can also expect a few Police songs thrown into the mix, too.

Slayer — Saturday at Hersheypark Stadium

When Slayer called it a day in 2019, it felt way too early for the thrash metal legends to say goodbye. Thankfully, the band agreed, and last year began to play a few select festivals and a couple of European headline dates. This weekend in Hershey marks their final scheduled performance of 2025 and only East Coast date for the year. Not only that, it’s probably the best metal show of the year within driving distance, not just because Slayer is headlining, but due to the support that will come from Knocked Loose, Suicidal Tendencies, Power Trip, Cavalera Conspiracy, and Exodus. And as an added bonus, as if one was needed, Cavalera will be doing the Sepultura classic “Chaos A.D.” in its entirety.

Mirador — Saturday 20 at The Theatre of Living Arts

Mirador, the band co-founded by Greta Van Fleet’s Jake Kiszka and Ida Mae’s Chris Turpin, brings their headlining tour to town after an initial series of shows opening for GVF’s “Starcatcher World Tour” in arenas last year. Anyone who saw those performances can attest to the group’s ability to conjure sky-shaking and boundary-bursting rock and roll by invoking spirits of ancient myth, traditional folklore, and Delta-born blues in one concentrated musical incantation. Mirador is filled out by Mikey Sorbello on drums and Nick Pini on bass and keyboards, with all of the members intent on stretching the limits of the rock genre, all while showcasing a myriad of musical influences.

Joelton Mayfield — Saturday at Kung Fu Necktie

Nashville’s Joelton Mayfield releases his debut album, “Crowd Pleaser,” which documents the widening chasm between his former identity as a sheltered Texas kid and as a burgeoning songwriter indulging in the music, movies, relationships, books, and conversations previously unknown to him. His sense of bigotry, misogyny, and myopia he’d left behind sharpened, too. The result is songs where he sorts through hypocrisies, doubts, and disappointments while doing his best to make sense of them. Many of the compositions — which he’ll be previewing this weekend at Kung Fu Necktie — could be considered alt-country, with Mayfield digging into a bedrock of so-called Americana, like levels of sediment waiting to be discovered.

ZZ Top — Sunday at Wind Creek Event Center

Few bands have been able to stand the test of time like ZZ Top, who continue their Elevation tour with a return to Bethlehem after playing Musikfest last summer and a stop at the American Music Theatre in Lancaster. Starting out as a boogie-blues band from Texas throughout the ’70s, the trio made their way through the ’80s with a bevy of MTV-friendly videos and a sound that reflected the synthesized grind of the decade. Though they lost bassist Dusty Hill a few years ago, singer/guitarist Billy F. Gibbons and drummer Frank Beard carry on the group’s legacy with longtime tech Elwood Francis stepping in seamlessly — sounds and looks-wise — with the perpetually sunglasses-clad outfit.

Dark Angel — Wednesday at Capital City Music Hall

West Coast thrash metal legends Dark Angel bring “The Extinction Level Event” tour to Harrisburg next week in their first domestic trek in over three decades, celebrating their comeback album, “Extinction Level Event,” their first new album since 1991. Formed in 1981 — the same year as Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax — Dark Angel earned a devoted cult following as pioneers and architects of the burgeoning thrash metal sound. Renowned for their ferocity and precision, the band’s signature blend of speed, technicality, and intensity made them beloved by headbangers around the world, as evidenced by the T-shirts and patches brandished by fans in the years since the band’s original run. Now they’re back and ready to give a whole new generation a taste of what they missed.

Fat Dog — Wednesday at Warehouse on Watts

Fat Dog, the South London rabblerousers who create an unexpected blend of electro-punk and rock and roll with snarling, techno soundscapes, industrial pop, and rave euphoria, come to town in support of their debut album, “WOOF,” which was released last year. Things have continued to build since then, with each show they play at a larger venue than the last — including a set at Glastonbury this year, which drew rave reviews. There’s a real sense of community around the band, one that’s being felt beyond the UK and well into the States, where they’re just starting to make their presence known.
