Antietam Valley Community Partnership to hold 10th annual community dinner

The Antietam Valley Community Partnership will hold its 10th annual community dinner Sunday.

The event in the Antietam High School cafeteria raises funds for college scholarships for high school seniors. Those living in the Antietam and Exeter School districts, including those attending private and cyberschools, are eligible.

“We have given away over $20,000 in scholarships so far,” said Larry O’Boyle, a coordinator of the fundraiser. “The winners have been from Antietam, Exeter and Berks Catholic (high schools) and cybercharter schools.”

Students who perform community service are eligible to apply for the scholarships.

“Our thoughts were to recognize kids who may not stand out in the classroom, playing field or stage,” O’Boyle said, “but who were selfless in service to our community.”

Because the award focuses on community service, the group hit on the idea of holding an old-fashioned community dinner to raise money.

They started by making homemade golumpkis, a traditional Polish food. The stuffed cabbage rolls were a staple at the church and community dinners, so popular in the last century.

After the initial success, they added two more Polish foods, halushki, a dish made with cabbage and dumplings, and locally made kielbasa.

Homemade chili is also on Sunday’s menu.

“For generations, community dinners have brought people together through work and fellowship,” O’Boyle said.

Volunteers are welcome to help prepare the food in the Antietam High School cafeteria on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Food will be served in the cafeteria on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
