from Animal Rescue League of Berks County, Humane Pennsylvania
The Animal Rescue League of Berks County (ARL) and Humane Pennsylvania have joined NBCUniversal Local’s 10th annual Clear The Shelters pet adoption and donation campaign from Aug. 10 to Sept. 10, with special adoption events scheduled. As part of the nationwide initiative, NBC and Telemundo stations partner with animal shelters and rescues in their communities to promote pet adoption and raise funds for participating shelters and rescues.
Animal Rescue League of Berks County
The Animal Rescue League of Berks County will have a special adoption event at the shelter on Saturday, Sept. 7, and Sunday, Sept. 8. Diggie Smalls, Mia, and Simba are available for adoption from the Animal Rescue League of Berks County as of Aug. 30, 2024.
All available cats and dogs six months or older and smallies will be free to adopt during the special adoption event days.
Adopters must go through the ARL’s regular procedures to adopt, including completing an adoption profile and speaking with an adoption counselor to ensure that the pet they select is a good match for their home, family, and lifestyle. They are also encouraged to bring their family members to meet their new pet at the time of adoption and to bring their dogs from home to meet and greet other dogs at the shelter. Dog adopters will also want to bring cash or a check for a $9.20 dog license, which is required at the time of adoption under PA law. Adopters will also want to bring a cat carrier (or they can purchase one from the ARL for $5) and a dog collar and leash (or they can purchase one from the ARL).
The ARL will be open Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; no appointments are necessary. A virtual “line” is set up at www.berksarl.org/hello, where guests can check in when they arrive at the shelter. All guests will be able to check their place in line and be notified by text when it’s their turn to work with an adoption counselor.
For more information, please get in touch with the ARL at adoption@berksarl.org.
Humane Pennsylvania
Humane Pennsylvania will have a special fee-waived adoption event for dogs, cats, and critters at its Berks County and Lancaster County adoption centers from Friday, Sept. 6, through Sunday, Sept. 8, thanks to the generosity of Violet Minor.
“I’ve always had a soft spot for cats and their unique personalities. That’s why supporting Humane Pennsylvania’s Clear the Shelters Adoption Weekend means so much to me,” Minor shared enthusiastically. “It’s all about giving these amazing pets a fresh start and spreading a little more kindness in our communities.”
Adopters wishing to provide a forever home for shelter animals are encouraged to visit the shelter campuses or HumanePA.org. All potential adopters are required to go through Humane Pennsylvania’s diligent adoption screening process (approval is not guaranteed). Some exclusions may apply.
Adoptions include:
- Humane Pennsylvania’s 30-day Adoption Health Supplement.
- Spaying or neutering (prior to adoption).
- Vaccinations (including current rabies vaccination) and de-worming medication.

About Clear The Shelters
Since its inception in 2015, Clear The Shelters has helped more than one million pets find new homes and raised millions of dollars for participating shelters and rescues. The 2023 campaign led to more than 158,000 adoptions, lifting the all-time adoption total past one million. More than 1,400 shelters and rescues representing 49 states and territories, including the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and Guam, along with 152 NBC and Telemundo stations, participated in last year’s campaign from Aug. 1-30.
The 2024 Clear The Shelters fundraising effort will again be led by Greater Good Charities, a global nonprofit and longtime campaign partner. Donations can be made now through Sept. 30 at ClearTheSheltersFund.org. Through the online platform built by Fundraise Up, donors have the option to cover transaction fees so that 100 percent of the funds go directly to the shelter or rescue of their choice.
Virtual pet adoptions are also returning for the sixth consecutive campaign through WeRescue. The WeRescue website and app enable users to browse adoptable pets in their area by breed, gender, size, and other factors, submit their adoption applications, and ask questions directly to shelters.
Clear the Shelters is an initiative spearheaded by NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations, a division of NBCUniversal. Clear the Shelters is sponsored nationally by Hill’s Pet Nutrition, a global leader in science-based pet nutrition.
