Berks Country: Calendar Sept. 1

Through Oct. 3

Farm Life on the Pennsylvania Dutch farmstead art exhibit, Schwenkfelder Library and Heritage Center, 105 Seminary St., Pennsburg, Montgomery County. Berks County artist Jon Bond is exhibiting 50 original works of art at the Schwenkfelder Library and Heritage Center until Oct. 3. Bond’s work includes egg tempera, oil, watercolor and silverpoint featuring Farm Life on the Pennsylvania Dutch farmsteads that surround his northern Berks art studio. The art depicts new views of an old way of life, including animals, implements, structures and the landscape itself.

Musician Dave Kline will join Jon for a special presentation on Aug. 29 at 2 p.m. Their collaborative multimedia event will tell the stories behind the art through spoken word and music. The center is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 9 a.m.-4 p.m.; Thursday 9 a.m.-8 p.m.; Saturday 10 a.m.-3 p.m. and Sunday 1-4 p.m. Details: http://www.schwenkfelder.com/

Sept. 5

Ringgold Band Concert, 5 p.m., Conrad Weiser Homestead Park, 28 Weiser Drive, near Wolmelsdorf. Annual event honors all military veterans. Admission and parking is free. Free will donation accepted. Please bring a lawn chair or blanket.

Sept. 6

Kauffman’s Chicken barbecue, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. (or sellout), Parkside Drive South  at Thrush Road, Wyomissing. Sponsored by Spring Township Lions Club. Cost: $9.50 for 1/2 chicken, baked potato apple sauce and roll. Call 484-578-9131 for info.

Virginville Grange Labor Day picnic, noon, Shoemakersville Park, Eighth Street, Shoemakersville. Lunch is at noon, and children games begin at 1 p.m. Bring a bingo prize along to play bingo after lunch. Hamburgers, hotdogs and drinks are provided, so please bring a covered dish to share. 

Sept. 11

Tractors in the Park, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Boyertown Community Park, 417 Madison St., Boyertown. Presented by Just Farm Kids and Boyertown Area Historical Society, includes food drink, power equipment rodeo, petting zoo, pedal tractor competition and tractors. Kauffman’s Chicken barbecue fundraiser, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Dairy Queen Parking Lot, 4399 Penn Ave., Sinking Spring. Call 610-678-4219 to pre-order. Cost: $8.50 for 1/2 chicken, baked potato. Extra food items (applesauce, baked beans, pepper cabbage) and baked goods available. Benefits Sinking Spring Area Historical Society.

Pig roast fundraiser, 4-6 p.m., Huffs Union Church, 540 Conrad Road, Alburtis. Meals include a pulled pork sandwich, ear of corn, coleslaw and a drink. The meals can be enjoyed in the park or can be taken out. Cost: $8. Desserts will also be available for sale. To purchase meal tickets ahead of time call the church office: 610-845-2626. Meals can be bought on the day of the event as well, on a first-come, first-served basis. In honor of this special day in history, patriotic music will be played in the park and 10% of proceeds will be donated to the Seisholtzville Fire Company.

Sept. 19

Oct. 9

Berks History Center Road Ramble, 10 a.m.- 4 p.m., start at Berks History Center, 940 Centre Ave., Reading, and ramble through Muhlenberg, Longswamp and Alsace townships. A self-guided driving tour concludes at the William Penn Fire Tower on Skyline Drive where there will be a pork barbecue fundraiser (additional charge). Food will also be available at the Longswamp Township Historical Society for purchase. Cost: $45 per car for non-members.
