Berks COVID data sees improvement

Weekly COVID data for Berks County saw improvement following a post-holiday spike.

The county’s weekly case count, case rate, hospitalizations and other data all saw improvement from last week in the state’s weekly data update.

Cases

After hitting a four-month high last week, the county’s weekly count of new COVID cases and reinfections dipped back down.

According to Wednesday’s update of the state Department of Health’s COVID dashboard, Berks had 576 new cases and reinfections. That’s down 200 from the 776 reported last week.

The county’s COVID cases per 100,000 residents were also down from data reported last week. The state’s Early Warning Monitoring Dashboard showed that between Jan. 4 and Jan. 10 the county had a case rate of 81 per 100,000 people. Last week the rate was 102 per 100,000 people.

The positivity rate of 18.5% in Berks was down more than 4 1/2 points from the rate of 23.1% reported last week.

Overall, Berks has had 124,209 COVID cases during the pandemic.

Statewide, this week’s data showed 88 COVID cases per 100,000 people and a positivity rate of 14.4%. Both numbers were down from data reported the previous week.

There have been 3,447,091 COVID cases in the state during the pandemic, with 15,230 new cases and reinfections added in Wednesday’s data update.

Deaths

The state, which reports the number of Berks residents to die no matter where the deaths take place, reported this week that a total of 1,733 county residents have died of COVID. That’s an increase of four from data reported last week.

Statewide, a total of 49,263 people have died of COVID, an increase of 229 from data reported last week.

Hospitalizations

Hospitalizations of COVID patients also saw a decrease this week, but remain at an elevated level.

According to state data released Wednesday, there were 69 hospitalized patients in the county. That’s down five from the previous week.

Despite the decrease, this week’s hospitalizations were the second most since Feb. 5.

Of the hospitalized patients in this week’s data, four were in intensive care and two were on ventilators. The number of intensive care patients was up one from data reported last week, while the number on ventilators was down three from last week.

Statewide there were 1,567 COVID patients hospitalized, down 180 from the number reported last week.

Vaccinations

• The number of fully vaccinated individuals in Berks was 260,056, an increase of 248.

• The number of individuals to receive a bivalent booster dose since Sept. 2 is 51,438, an increase of 1,328.
