Berks sets case record for delta variant surge with 149

Berks County set a delta-variant surge record with 149 new COVID-19 cases in the Tuesday update of the Pennsylvania Department of Health dashboard.

The pandemic total increased to nearly 51,000 at 50,958. It is the eighth week of the surge. It was also the highest daily total since May 7 as the spring surge waned.

The seven- and 14-day averages saw significant increases to 102 and 89, respectively. Those averages bottomed out at four each on July 9.

The daily update is gathered from data for the previous day ending at midnight, in this case Monday.

There is some element of catch-up in the Tuesday report because test result processing slows during the weekend. The averages smooth the uneven processing.

The last time the seven-day was in triple digits was May 12, again as the spring surge waned.

COVID hospitalizations also peaked with the Tuesday report, showing Berks with 47 patients total between Reading Hospital and Penn State Health St. Joseph, with 13 in the intensive care units.

Those were the totals at the end of Monday. By Tuesday morning, Reading Hospital had updated its own dashboard, showing 23 patients with four in the ICU, four discharges in the previous 24 hours and one death.

The Berks County coroner’s office is expected to issue its weekly report later Tuesday. There have been at least two COVID deaths in Reading Hospital since the last report on Aug. 24.

On Aug. 24, the coroner’s office reported five COVID deaths of Berks residents, but only three have shown up so far in the state’s accounting. The office reported a sixth death of an out-of-county resident.

Pennsylvania

The state overall added 3,249 more COVID cases in the Tuesday update, and the pandemic total passed 1.3 million.

The surge record was set Saturday with 3,790 cases. The numbers in the delta surge have not been climbing as quickly as the previous surges.

By Tuesday, the data showed the case numbers are about 75% of the spring surge and 30% of the winter surge. At eight or nine weeks in, those surges began to subside in terms of case numbers but hospitalizations and deaths continued to rise.

There were another 50 people hospitalized, and the daily total reached 1,850. Of those, there six more in the ICUs around the state for a total of 474.

The state overall added 21 COVID deaths for a pandemic total of 28,235.
