Bernardine Franciscan Sisters receive $10,000 grant to support adult literacy center in Reading

The  Bernardine Franciscan Sisters have received a $10,000 grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation to support the sister’s adult literacy center in Reading.

The grant is part of $10.6 million provided by the foundation to organizations across the U.S. to support adult, family and summer literacy programs.

The Bernardine Sister’s Mother Veronica Resource Center, 449 S. Sixth St., provides classes and tutoring in English as a second language, GED preparation, adult basic education, computer training and citizenship preparation. The grant will allow the center to buy new instructional materials and technology, as well as provide specialized teacher training over the next year.

“Literacy is a fundamental path to opportunity, but too many adults in our community struggle with basic reading and writing abilities,” said Sister Cara Garofalo, director of the center. “This generous grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation will help strengthen our efforts to equip more adults with the essential literacy and workforce skills they need to thrive.”
