Bicycle struck by passing motorist in Exeter Township

An Exeter Township man’s bicycle was struck Monday as he rode north on Bingaman Street in the township.

The cyclist, 55, was riding in the direction of traffic when his bike was struck from behind by a northbound vehicle, according to Exeter police Sgt. Sean Fullerton.

Fullerton said the motorist, 42, also of Exeter was attempting to pass the bicyclist when the vehicle made contact with the rear of bicycle.

The accident occurred about 3 p.m. in the 100 block of Bingaman.

The bicyclist was transported to Reading Hospital with suspected minor injuries, Fullerton said.

No traffic citations have been issued, he said.

Fullerton said it important to note that the law requires motorists to leave a four-foot buffer when passing a bicycle.

He added this safety tip.

“Bicyclists should always ride with the traffic as this one did. It is extremely dangerous to ride against traffic.”
