Boyertown, Kutztown University grad Jerome Kapp signs with the UFL’s St. Louis Battlehawks

Jerome Kapp will continue his football career with the St. Louis Battlehawks of the newly-formed United Football League.

The Boyertown and Kutztown University graduate signed a letter of intent with St. Louis on Thursday, securing his spot on the team’s training camp roster. Kapp will compete for a spot on the team’s regular season roster during training camp, which begins in February.

“It’s a blessing just being able to have a spot to showcase my abilities,” Kapp said. “It’s a weight off my shoulders and now I can just put my head down and train.”

A standout wide receiver with the Golden Bears from 2019-22, Kapp signed with the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent last May after trying out at the Jets’ rookie, non-contact mini cap a few weeks prior. He was waived by the Jets on Aug. 29 ahead of the regular season.

Kapp played in all four of New York’s preseason games in 2023, recording one catch for 6 yards. He also played special teams.

“I’m ecstatic,” Kapp said. “Just (to) learn a new playbook and just being able to put what I learned from the Jets to work, not just at a local field.”

The Battlehawks are a member of the United Football League, which is the product of a merger between the most recent versions of the XFL and the United States Football League. The new spring football league was formally announced on Dec. 31, 2023.

The UFL season is set to begin on March 30. The league features eight teams: the Birmingham Stallions, the Houston Roughnecks, the Memphis Showboats and the Michigan Panthers, formerly of the USFL, and the Arlington Renegades, the D.C. Defenders, the San Antonio Brahmas and St. Louis, formerly of the XFL.

“I’m blessed with this opportunity and I’m not looking ahead at all,” Kapp said. “It’s brick by brick, day by day.”
