Concert previews of Ripe, Peter Case, High Vis, Skinny Puppy, more [Seven in Seven]

Welcome to Seven in Seven, where we look at shows coming to the region over the next week. As always, whether your musical tastes are rock and roll, jazz, heavy metal, R&B, singer-songwriter or indie, there will always be something to check out.

Here are seven of the best on the docket for the week of April 14:

Ripe — Friday at Brooklyn Bowl

Widely known for their high-energy live show, Ripe first got together at Berklee College of Music and almost immediately began drawing acclaim and a fervent fan following for their horn-blasted fusion of deep funk, soulful jazz, pop melodies and kaleidoscopic improvisation. The band honed their sound over a pair of well-received EPs and countless live shows, whipping increasingly packed houses into a frenzy with relentless grooves and a knack for catchy songcraft. Their latest LP, “Bright Blues,” sees the alt-pop unit pushing their already buoyant sound toward new heights with fresh grooves and an all-encompassing approach that showcases the full scope of their musical vision.

Peter Case — Friday at The Lounge at World Café Live

After his power pop trio the Nerves disbanded in the late-’70s, Peter Case formed The Plimsouls, who fused garage rock, upbeat pop, British Invasion sounds and vintage R&B, evident on their signature hit, “A Million Miles Away.” Deciding to embark on a solo career, he signed with Geffen Records and followed an acoustic path in more of the classic solo singer/songwriter mode, taking his musicianship to new levels and quickly becoming a favorite with music critics. Though he’ll be showcasing tracks from throughout his career at the World Café Live gig, Case’s most recent LP was the 2019 acoustic blues collection “The Midnight Broadcast.”

Harper and Midwest Kind — Saturday at Jamey’s House of Music

Award-winning singer-songwriter and virtuoso harmonica player Peter D. Harper, raised in Australia but now based in Detroit, creates a heady mix of blues and roots music through his creative use of the harmonica and haunting drone of the didgeridoo. Add to that a powerful, soulful voice and a deep, almost mystical approach to music, and you’ve got a rich musical stew of ’50s rhythm and blues, a ’60s message of love and unity and ’70s funky soul served up in as a bluesy feast. Along with his backing band Midwest Kind, Harper will be inviting the audience to chow down come Saturday in Lansdowne.

High Vis — Saturday at Foto Club

London’s High Vis exploded onto the DIY scene in 2016, earning a devoted following for their intense live shows and immediate lyrics that tackle themes from class politics to the challenges of everyday life. Their exceptional second full-length album, “Blending,” released in the fall of last year, landed on countless end-of-year lists and garnered overwhelming acclaim worldwide. The band’s signature sound of aggressive, artful punk is as tough as any hardcore record, yet sonically opens beyond the parameters of any genre or scene. The Foto Club show is the final on the debut High Vis tour of North America, and it wouldn’t be a shocker if this is the last chance to catch them in such a small venue.

Chlöe — Tuesday at The Fillmore

One half of the R&B sister duo Chloe x Halle — now known as Chlöe — stepped out on her own earlier this year with her debut solo effort, “In Pieces.” Over three years in the making and being billed by the PR machine as “the fan-demanded project,” it showcases songs written, arranged and executive produced by the 24-year-old songstress. The five-time Grammy nominee is a veritable veteran of the industry at this point, yet this will be her first headline tour, making it all the more special.

Skinny Puppy — Tuesday at The Theatre of Living Arts

Industrial dance legends Skinny Puppy have decided to mark their 40th anniversary by calling it a day. Founded in 1982, the Canadian outfit haven’t toured in eight years as it is, but the importance of what is promised to be the group’s last outing makes this run bittersweet. For the uninitiated, devotees of the Puppy include everyone from Nine Inch Nail’s mastermind Trent Reznor to Davey Havok of AFI and Blaqk Audio and everyone in between. The band’s synth-heavy outings like “VIVIsectVI” and “Too Dark Park” are considered masterpieces of the genre that still carry weight to this day.

Rachael Sage — Thursday, April 20, at The Loft at City Winery

Since founding her own label MPress Records over two decades ago, NYC-based alt-pop artist Rachael Sage has steadily released a slew of vibrant, dynamic albums and toured with an eclectic list of artists including Ani DiFranco, Beth Hart, Howard Jones, Shawn Colvin and Judy Collins, with whom she also recorded a critically-acclaimed duet of Neil Young’s “Helpless.” In addition to being a six-time Independent Music Award-winning musician and producer, Sage is also a John Lennon Contest Grand Prize winner who has released over 20 diverse albums and EPs. The show is a co-headliner with Americana duo Annalyse & Ryan.
