Eagles’ Nick Sirianni sort of sings praises for Chiefs fans

Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni is trending on social media after taunting Chiefs supporters following the Eagles’ 21-17 Monday night victory at Arrowhead Stadium.

Video shows Sirianni coming to an abrupt stop in the tunnel leading off the field and looking upward while screaming at the top of his lungs, “Hey, I don’t hear (bleep) anymore Chiefs fans!”

After a pause, Sirianni continues his walk and after noticing a camera dead ahead yells “See yaaa!” You don’t see that every day.

The game obviously meant a lot to Sirianni, not just because it was the first time the Eagles faced the Chiefs since they defeated the Eagles in Super Bowl LVII, but the first time the Birds beat Kansas City head coach Andy Reid, the former Eagles head coach who was 4-0 against his old employer.

Sirianni did not apologize for the display during his Friday news conference.

“Yeah, you know, emotions run high in games,” Sirianni said. “I give it to the Kansas City fans. They were rowdy. They had some good things to say coming in at halftime. They had some good things to say when they scored. I don’t hear fans all that often. I did in this game. I definitely heard them at halftime. I give them credit. They aren’t Philly fans. They’re not as good as Philly fans, but I definitely heard a couple things they were saying in the game.”

The Eagles lead the NFL with a 9-1 record. Sirianni is 32-12 (.727) since taking over the Eagles’ job, the record in league parlance second only to Reid (33-11, .750) since the start of the 2021 season.

It was just the latest emotional flareup this season for the Eagles, who like their leader, tend to wear their emotions on their sleeves.

During the Eagles’ win over the Los Angeles Rams Sirianni gave MVP candidate Jalen Hurts some animated coaching points after his quarterback was picked off in the end zone.

Fiery Eagles center Jason Kelce, apparently upset over the red zone breakdowns that day, gave Sirianni and offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland an earful of rant on the sideline. Kelce would later say he was too emotional.

Eagles wide receiver DeVonta Smith, who caught just one pass while A.J. Brown and Dallas Goedert both amassed more than 100 receiving yards was shown being consoled by Sirianni.

And who can forget a few weeks previous to that when Brown confronted Hurts on the Eagles’ sideline at Lincoln Financial Field for an animated “discussion?” Brown went on to have six straight 100-yard receiving games.

For whatever reason, Sirianni seems to be more volatile at road games. You’ll have to wait to see if he dials it back this weekend when the Eagles oppose the Buffalo Bills (6-5) at Lincoln Financial Field. The Eagles are three-point favorites.

“You always look at those things,” Sirianni said. “To me, with everything that I am, I’m not going to hide who I am. I talked to my buddy after the (Colts) game last year because I had something like that with the Indy game and he said that he was talking to another teacher because he’s a teacher. It was interesting. The other teacher said to my best friend, he was like, ‘Hey, did you see how cool it was that Nick was celebrating with the Eagles fans after the game?’ He laughed. He goes, ‘Nick wasn’t celebrating with the Eagles fans, he was talking (trash) to the Colts fans. He’s been doing that since I’ve known him. That’s who he is.’”

When it comes to expression, Sirianni doesn’t wrestle with himself to hold emotions in.

“You know what? I think if you’re somebody you’re not, that gets seen through by everybody, and so, hey … I was emotional after the game,” Sirianni said. “That was a little playful back and forth with the Kansas City fans. I tip my hat to them.”

Defensive end Derek Barnett, the Eagles’ first-round pick during the 2017 Super Bowl championship season, has been released. The Eagles thought him worthy of a tweet.

“The Eagles organization would like to thank Derek for his contributions to this team over the last seven seasons,” the X statement read. “As a rookie, Derek made one of the most memorable plays in our Super Bowl victory over the Patriots. He has been a great teammate who always played with high energy and effort. We wish Derek nothing but the best.”

Barnett, 27, has been penalty and injury prone since recovering Brandon Graham’s strip sack of Tom Brady late in the Super Bowl LI triumph over New England. While University of Tennessee product has 21.5 career sacks, he also has 24 career penalties accepted.

Unable to trade Barnett, the Eagles gave him permission to orchestrate a trade, which also failed.

The Eagles are eager to see what rookie first-round pick Nolan Smith can do for the pass rush.

The Eagles will be without the services of tight end Grant Calcaterra (ankle) and defensive tackle Milton Williams (concussion) when they take on the Bills. Tight end Dallas Goedert (broken arm) will be sidelined for a second straight week and wide receiver Quez Watkins (hamstring) is questionable.

The Bills will be without cornerback Dane Jackson (concussion) and safety Taylor Rapp (neck).
