PHILADELPHIA — After locking up much of their offensive line this offseason, the Eagles turned their attention to defense in the early rounds of the NFL draft.
They selected safety Andrew Mukuba out of Texas with their second-round pick (64th overall) on Friday night after trading up for Alabama linebacker Jihaad Campbell a day earlier in the opening round.
In the third round, the Eagles traded back twice, first exchanging their 96th overall pick with Atlanta for the 101st plus a fifth rounder next year. Then they traded No 101 and a fourth rounder (134th overall) to Denver, dropping out of the third round entirely, in return for Nos. 111, 130 and 191, apparently seeing similar value later in the draft with an opportunity to collect picks.
Mukuba, who played nickel as well as free safety, is slightly undersized at 5-11, 185 pounds, but possesses 4.45 speed, agility, and an ability to read quarterbacks and make big plays. He closes fast on running plays but needs to become a better tackler, according to scouting reports.
Mukuba transferred to Texas at the end of the 2023 season after being a three-year starter at Clemson. Last season with the Longhorns, he nabbed five interceptions, which was tied for most in the SEC, and had seven pass deflections. He faced his former team in the first round of the College Football Playoff and recorded three tackles and a pass deflection against the Tigers.
