Exeter grad Taylor Bertolet elevated to Chargers active roster

Taylor Bertolet’s perseverance may finally pay off.

The kicker and Exeter grad could make his NFL debut Sunday for the Los Angeles Chargers against the Browns at Cleveland.

The Chargers announced Saturday that they had activated Bertolet from the practice squad. The team had signed Bertolet, who turns 30 later this month, to their practice squad on Thursday as insurance in case ailing kicker Dustin Hopkins is unable to play.

Hopkins is listed as questionable on the injury report with a right quad injury that he suffered in last week’s game against Houston. His playing status is a game-time decision, according to reports.

Los Angeles is the latest stop on Bertolet’s football journey since his college career at Texas A&M, and he’s still looking to kick in a regular season NFL game for the first time.

Since signing with the L.A. Rams as an undrafted free agent in May 2016, Bertolet has been with the Broncos twice and the Jets twice in the offseason/preseason. He also had stints on the practice squad with the Panthers in 2020 and was on the Minnesota Vikings’ practice squad that same season.

In addition, he’s kicked in the Alliance of American Football, in the CFL and last spring with the New Orleans Breakers in the USFL.
