Four Berks teams remain alive in the District 3 doubles tournaments

Four Berks County teams remain alive in the semifinals of the District 3 Girls Tennis Doubles Championships that began Friday at Hershey Racquet Club.

In Class 3A, top-seeded sisters Jen Manta and Judith Manta of Muhlenberg will face Reading High’s fourth-seeded team of Ashley Retana and Hailey Guerrero Saturday in a semifinal match at Hershey Racquet Club at 1 p.m.

In Class 2A, Conrad Weiser’s top-seeded team of Emma Perkins and Michelle Timothy will face Wyomissing’s fourth-seeded team of Elise Wang and Ananya Rai, also at 1 p.m.

The finals will follow.

The Manta sisters, who won the Berks Flight 1 doubles title, defeated Lampeter-Strasburg’s Ryan Gerhardt and Kylie Gerhardt 6-1, 6-2 in the first round, then beat Cumberland Valley’s Nora Esack and Emily Leach 6-1, 6-0 in the quarterfinals.

Retana and Guerrero beat Hershey’s Abby Yurick and Ece Aydogan 6-2, 6-1 in the first round, then Mechanicsburg’s Taryn Zerbe and Patricia Kandrot 6-3, 6-4 in the quarters.

Also in Class 3A, Exeter’s Anya Whitman and Hansika Kunduru defeated Central York’s Rachel Haupt and Audrey Stewart 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (2) in the first round before falling to New Oxford’s second-seeded team of Anya Rosenbach and Allison Horick 6-3, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.

Rosenbach and Horick will face Red Lion’s Lexi Lakatosh and Sophie Lanius in the semis. Lakatosh and Lanius beat Hempfield’s third-seeded team of Grace Lehman and Sophie Carson 7-5, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.

In Class 2A, Perkins and Timothy had a first-round bye, then defeated West York’s Alisa Steele and Lexi Sanderson 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals.

Wang and Rai defeated East Pennsboro’s Bella Heckman and Monica Nguyen 6-2, 6-1 in the first round, then beat Delone Catholic’s Olivia Roth and Ella Knox 6-1, 7-5 in the quarters.

Kutztown’s third-seeded team of Sierra Smith and Elena Sewell had a first-round bye, then fell to Elco’s Ali Bender and Camryn Lehr 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 in the quarterfinals.

Brandywine Heights’ Abby Davidhesier and Maci Rohrbach lost their first-round match to Kennard-Dale’s Brianna Serruto and Grace Maccarelli 6-1, 6-0.

Serruto and Maccarelli then defeated Lancaster Country Day’s second-seeded team of Maggie Auman and Sophia Babar 6-1, 6-1 in the quarters.

Perkins, a two-time Berks singles champ, teamed with then-senior Alex Pancu to win last year’s District 3 and PIAA doubles titles in Class 2A. Perkins and Timothy finished second in Berks this year to the Manta sisters.

The top three teams in each class advance to the PIAA Doubles Championships Nov. 5-6 at Hershey Racquet Club.
