Free tickets being offered for John McEuen workshop and concert in Reading

The Reading Musical Foundation is offering free tickets for Guitar-A-Rama 2023, a community workshop, jam and concert starring Nitty Gritty Dirt Band founder John McEuen with Dave Kline & The Mountain Folk Band and members of Big Valley Bluegrass. The event will take place Sept. 17 at the DoubleTree by Hilton hotel in downtown Reading.

McEuen, also of “Mr. Bojangles” fame, will stop in Reading as part of his worldwide “Circle” tour celebrating 50 years since his landmark “Will the Circle be Unbroken” LP with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, with many of Nashville’s brightest country and bluegrass stars of the era performing on a collection of music that has become folk, bluegrass and mountain music standard repetoire.

The concert will feature music director Dave Kline and other backing local musicians: Bennie Sims, Keith Kupp, Kenny Gehret and Travis “The Mad Fiddler” Wetzel.

One hundred tickets are available for the pre-concert workshop, master class and jam, and 800 tickets are available for the main concert later in the afternoon. Tickets will be required for entry.

Reading Musical Foundation students and any others studying banjo, guitar, fiddle, mandolin, dobro, upright bass and related Appalachian acoustic instruments who attend will be invited to perform along with the band on the main stage during the concert on the song “Will the Circle Be Unbroken.”

The concert set list will be posted in advance for any students or jammers who sign up for the free workshop session, so they can become familiar with the repertoire.

A free post-concert bluegrass jam will be held in the DoubleTree’s Cheers American Bistro, hosted by members of Lehigh Valley’s award-winning Big Valley Bluegrass Band.
