Hamburg grad Hunter Shuey pitches North Carolina Greensboro to conference baseball title

Former Hamburg standout Hunter Shuey threw a six-hitter as North Carolina Greensboro routed top-seeded Wofford 12-2 in seven innings Sunday at Greenville, S.C., to win the Southern Conference title and clinch a berth in the NCAA Tournament.

Shuey, a freshman right-hander, held the Terriers (42-16-1) to no earned runs, walked none and struck out four in his sixth start and his finest performance of the year. The fourth-seeded Spartans (34-28) beat Mercer and Samford on Saturday in the double-elimination tournament and then defeated Wofford twice on Sunday on its home field.

He picked up a save Friday in a 9-7 win over Western Carolina, allowing no runs and no hits in one inning. Earlier that day, he pitched two innings in relief and gave up two runs on five hits in a 6-3 loss to Wofford.

With the championship-game win over Wofford, Shuey is 2-2 with a 5.07 ERA in 23 games.

North Carolina Greensboro will find out Monday when and where it will begin play in the NCAA Tournament.
