Hamburg School District turns to a familiar face for new superintendent

The Hamburg School District has announced a familiar face will take over the top administrative position in the district.

At a school board meeting Monday night, the board approved the appointment of Dr. Christopher Beissel, who is the Hamburg High School principal, as the district’s new superintendent. He will begin in his new position on July 1, following the retirement of Dr. Richard Mextorf, who has been superintendent since 2015.

Beissel and the district have agreed to a three-year contract that will pay him a starting salary of $175,000.

“We are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Christopher Beissel, a respected leader within the Hamburg School District, to serve as our new superintendent of schools,” school board President Ryan Gebely said in a statement announcing the move. “Dr. Beissel has consistently demonstrated an unwavering commitment to our students and staff, advocating for their success and creating positive learning and working environments.”

Gebely said Beissel has an understanding of the district’s strengths, goals and community needs, adding that he has an innovative approach and a collaborative leadership style.

“The Hamburg School District Board of Directors is confident that Dr. Beissel will successfully lead the Hamburg School District to meet the needs of our students and staff, and to serve our community,” Gebely said. “We look forward to working together to build upon our successes and pave the way for continued excellence in education.”

Beissel has served as principal of the high school since 2018. He has been with the district since 2011, holding positions of assistant high school principal and as a language arts and literacy teacher at the middle school.

Prior to joining Hamburg, Beissel worked as an elementary school teacher in the Reading School District.

Mextorf earlier this year announced he would be concluding his 40-year career in education on June 30.
