IronPigs overcome Painter’s rough start to win sixth in a row

Andrew Painter struggled for the second consecutive start, allowing six earned runs on 10 hits and three walks in 5 1/3 innings of Wednesday night’s 8-7 IronPigs’ walk-off victory over the Toledo Mud Hens.

Payton Henry’s two-out, bases-loaded single scored Gabriel Rincones with the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth for Lehigh Valley, which has won six games in a row to improve to 79-53 overall, 33-25 in the second half.

Painter gave up two home runs and threw only 12 of 28 first-pitch strikes. He threw 59 of 97 pitches for strikes.

The right-hander yielded 12 earned runs on 19 hits and six walks in his last two outings (11 1/3 combined innings). His season ERA is at 5.62.

Painter, who has a career-high 109 innings pitched, walked the first two batters of the game and gave up a run two batters later on a sacrifice fly. He settled down, getting nine outs on the next nine batters before giving up a solo home run to start the fourth. But he got a double-play grounder to escape further trouble.

He got the first two outs in the fifth before failing to field a dribbler running toward the first-base bag. Two singles and a walk yielded an unearned run and added 15 pitches to Painter’s total.

Toledo then got single, home run, double, single to chase Painter with one out in the sixth.
