Jets linebacker Quincy Williams agrees to three-year contract: sources

A day before the NFL’s legal negotiation window, Gang Green re-signed one of their own players.

According to a league source, the Jets and linebacker Quincy Williams have agreed on a three-year, $18 million contract, which could max out to $21 million in incentives. NFL Network was the first to report Williams’ deal.

After two seasons with the Jaguars, the Jets claimed Williams off waivers. Since then, Williams has been one of the more steady players on the Jets defense.

In 2021, he recorded 110 tackles, which was second to C.J. Mosley (158) and nine tackles for loss. Last season, Williams followed that up with 106 tackles and 12 tackles for loss.

Gang Green felt like Williams was one of the keys to their defense, which finished fourth in the league in total defense and points allowed in 2022. Williams was one of two Jets starting linebackers scheduled to be free agents at the start of the league year.

Kwon Alexander, who signed a one-year deal with the Jets days into training camp last August, is also an unrestricted free agent. This is the second move the Jets have made on the defensive end during the last week.

On Thursday, the Jets acquired Ravens safety Chuck Clark for a 2024 seventh-round pick.

Re-signing Williams should make his brother Quinnen Williams happy as the Jets want to extend the defensive tackle this offseason. Last year, Quinnen Williams had a career season as he recorded 55 tackles and 12 sacks as he was a first-team All-Pro and a Pro Bowl selection.

In January, Quinnen Williams told reporters he would not attend the Jets’ voluntary offseason program in May without a new contract. He’s in the final year of his rookie contract, scheduled to pay him $9.5 million guaranteed.

Earlier on Sunday, Commanders defensive tackle Daron Payne agreed to a four-year, $90 million contract.

“We’ve had several good discussions with [agent] Nicole [Lynn] and Quinnen since the season,” said Jets’ GM Joe Douglas. “We feel really good about where we’re at and, again, feel good that this process is going to play out in the right way.”
