The Berks County Parks & Recreation Department continues to present programs promoting nature, history, and outdoor activity throughout the month of September 2024.

Sunday, Sept. 1 | Labor Day Float | 9 a.m. at Stilling Basin
Float down the Tulpehocken Creek starting from the Stilling Basin at Blue Marsh Lake to the carry-out at Gring’s Mill. Participants must provide their own vessels (paddleboards or kayaks) and transportation.
Free | Registration is recommended.

Monday, Sept. 2 | Ringgold Band | 10 a.m. – noon at Heritage Center
Bring your own chair and blanket and enjoy traditional band music against the backdrop of our covered bridge and the Tulpehocken Creek.
Free | Open to the public.

Saturday, Sept. 7 | Fall Frolic Wellness Walk | 9 a.m. at Angora Fruit Farm
Join park staff as we get out to enjoy an hour-long brisk walk with like-minded friends. We’ll be meeting at the Angora Fruit Farm.
Free | Registration is recommended.

Sunday, Sept. 8 | Charcoal, Tree Planting, and Pantyhose: The History of Nolde Forest | 2 p.m. at Heritage Center
Join staff from the Nolde Forest Environmental Education Center as we learn about the social and environmental factors that made Nolde Forest the gem of Reading that it is today.
Free | Open to the public.

Thursday, Sept. 12 | Trail Tales (replacing Read with a Ranger) | 10 a.m. at Bingaman House
Get wrapped up in a trail tale and discover plants and animal friends in our parks. This toddler-age program focuses on a nature topic each month partnered with a story and a craft. Geared towards children ages 3-5.

Thursday, Sept. 12 | The Return of the Bats | 7-8:30 p.m. at Heritage Center
Join Dr. Karen Campbell of Albright College for her popular talk as she explores and explains the lives of bats, from around the world to Pennsylvania to our own Wertz’s Covered Red Bridge.
Free | Open to the public.

Saturday, Sept. 14 | Family Fishing Day | 9 a.m. at Antietam Lake Park
Join Parks and Recreation staff and rangers as we enjoy an evening of fishing fun. No experience or tackle necessary, and no fishing license required. All rods, bait, and tackle will be provided.
Free | Registration is required.

Saturday, Sept. 14 | Nature Journaling with Berks Nature | 10 a.m. at Heritage Center
Start by building your own nature journal and then head out into the park for inspiration.
Free | Registration is required.

Sunday, Sept. 15 | Farm Fest: Celebrating Farm Life Past to Present | noon – 4 p.m. at Heritage Center
Come celebrate farm life and farm culture with this fun family event where we look behind the scenes and visit some of the rarely opened parts of the property that tell that story of life on a Berks County farm. Wagon rides, animals, food, and more.
Farm Tours with Jim Ohlinger – 12:15 p.m. and 2 p.m. | Native Pollinator Talk – 1 p.m. | Stories of Berks County – 3 p.m.

Tuesday, Sept. 17 | Hike & Yoga | 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Berks Leisure Area
Walk under the glow of a full moon on the beautiful Union Canal trail while you enjoy the sounds of the Tulpehocken Creek. Once the moon rises, we will stop for a relaxing yoga class and peaceful meditation.

Friday, Sept. 27 | Fall Glow Hike | 7 p.m. at Angora Fruit Farm
Kick off the start of the fall season with some fun! Berks Parks and Recreation staff will guide a twilight hike on Antietam Lake Park’s forested trails on the first day of fall by the light of glowsticks. This program is appropriate for children ages 7+ due to uneven terrain on the trail.

Saturday, Sept. 28 | Gruber Wagon Works Belt Running Day | 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. at Heritage Center
The Gruber Wagon Works “come to life” during this unique demonstration. The belt running demonstration will begin at 11 a.m. and run through 4 p.m. The Wagon Works will be open to the public throughout the day with stationed guides throughout the museum. Demonstrations of the Otto “Hit and Miss” Engine will take place at 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m.
