The Reading Symphony Orchestra (RSO) is thrilled to present the grand finale of its 2023-2024 season with an extraordinary concert experience, “Symphonie Fantastique,” on May 11 at the Santander Performing Arts Center. Prepare to be transported into the realm of the ‘fantastical’ with Hector Berlioz’s iconic masterpiece, featuring an exhilarating blend of cackling witches, nightmarish waltzes, and haunting tolling bells.

This groundbreaking symphonic work tells the story of an artist’s passionate obsession with a woman. Divided into five movements, the symphony depicts the artist’s tumultuous emotions, from infatuation to despair, as he experiences vivid dreams, hallucinations, and fantasies fueled by unrequited love. Themes of obsession, longing, and the supernatural are explored through Berlioz’s innovative orchestration and evocative storytelling, making “Symphonie Fantastique” a quintessential work of Romantic-era music.

This spectacular evening of music will commence with a sublime performance of Frederic Chopin’s Piano Concerto No.1, delicately interpreted by the sensational Michelle Cann. As a distinguished member of the piano faculty at the renowned Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, Cann brings her exceptional talent and artistry to the stage, promising an unforgettable rendition of Chopin’s timeless concerto.

Chopin’s Piano Concerto No.1, a masterful work of the Romantic era, showcases the composer’s unique blend of lyrical melodies and virtuosic piano writing. Composed in 1830, the concerto consists of three movements: Allegro maestoso, Romance: Larghetto, and Rondo: Vivace. It features lush harmonies, expressive themes, and brilliant piano passages that will highlight Michelle Cann’s technical prowess and emotional depth. The concerto reflects Chopin’s characteristic style, combining elements of Polish folk music with the grandeur and sophistication of the classical concerto form.

Featuring the largest orchestra of the season, the Reading Symphony Orchestra, Michelle Cann, and Music Director, Andrew Constantine, will assure audiences are taken on a journey of passion, emotion, and imagination. Don’t miss this opportunity to witness a spellbinding performance that promises to be perfect way to end the season.
