Quarterback Erik Nickel ran for two touchdowns Saturday to lead 25th-ranked Kutztown to a 20-3 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East football win over visiting Shippensburg.
The victory keeps the Golden Bears (4-0, 6-1) alone atop the PSAC East standings.
Nickel struggled to move Kutztown through the air, completing just 6-of-18 passes for 80 yards. But Kutztown racked up 234 yards on the ground, led by Jeremiah Nelson with 85 yards on nine carries.
The Kutztown defense limited Shippensburg (2-2, 5-2) to 19 yards on the ground and sacked Red Raiders quarterback Brycen Mussina seven times.
Jaxson Montross gave Shippensburg a 3-0 lead with a 34-yard field goal with 9:34 left in the first quarter.
Kutztown took a 6-3 lead on a 1-yard Jordan Davis TD run on the second play of the second quarter.
Nickel scored on a 1-yard run with 4:20 left in the second quarter to give Kutztown a 13-6 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, Nickel scored on a 3-yard run with 8:09 left.
That was more than the Golden Bears defense needed. Kutztown held Shippensburg to nine first downs, intercepted one of Mussina’s passes and forced eight Shippensburg punts.
Shippensburg was 5-for-18 on third-down conversions and 0-for-3 on fourth-down tries.
