Kutztown University received the top seed in the Super One Region and a first-round bye in the NCAA Division II football playoffs, it was announced Sunday.
The Golden Bears (10-1) beat Slippery Rock 38-32 Saturday in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championship Game to basically lock up the top seed.
Kutztown, ranked 16th in the AFCA Division II coaches poll, will play the winner of Saturday’s game between Bentley and fourth-seeded New Haven on Nov. 27 at Andre Reed Stadium.
The NCAA breaks the 28-team Division II playoff field into four Super Regions. Eight teams qualify from each region, with the No. 1 seed getting a first-round bye.
The NCAA appearance will be the fifth in program history for Kutztown and the third straight. The Golden Bears also qualified in 2010 and 2011. Last season was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Kutztown last earned a No. 1 seed in 2010.
This will be KU’s fourth appearance in the second round (2010, 2011, 2019). The Golden Bears are 0-3 in their previous three second-round games, including a 20-17 home loss two years ago to Notre Dame College (Ohio).
In the region’s other first-round games Saturday, second-seeded Shepherd will host Findlay and third-seeded Notre Dame College will host Slippery Rock.
The quarterfinals will be Saturday, Dec. 4, the semifinals Dec. 11, and the championship game Dec. 18.
