Kutztown outscored Mary by 14 points over the final 16:03 to come away with a 65-59 win in its season opener Friday at the D2CAA Tipoff Classic at the Trailhead at Billings, Mont.
The game was the Golden Bears’ first since the 2019-20 season. Last season was canceled due to the pandemic.
KU trailed 40-32 with 6:21 left in the third quarter.
Kutztown’s Abbey Hearn hit a 3-pointer to tie at 49-49 with two seconds left in the third. Casey Remolde hit two free throws to give the Golden Bears the lead for good at 51-49 early in the fourth.
Hearn finished with 14 points and seven rebounds, and Remolde had 12 points and eight rebounds. Zara Zerman had 13 points for KU.
Lexie Schneider led Mary, which is located in Bismarck, N.D., with 20 points.
