Kutztown University’s Andrew Dunn Jr. finished second at heavyweight at the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships Saturday at St. Louis.
The top-seeded Dunn, looking to win his second national title, lost 5-3 to second-seeded Darrell Mason of Minnesota State in the final. Dunn, a grad student from Bethlehem, won the championship in 2019. The 2020 meet was canceled, as was KU’s 2020-21 season.
Mason (22-0) got a takedown in the first period to go up 2-0. Dunn (23-1) tied it with a pair of escapes.
Mason got an escape of his own in the third to take a 3-2 lead, then got another takedown with 1:02 left to make it 5-2. Dunn escaped with 57 seconds left, but couldn’t tie it.
Dunn advanced with a 3-1 overtime victory over defending national champ Kameron Teacher of St. Cloud State in the semifinals.
Dunn finished his KU career as a three-time All-American and with a 69-3 record.
