Letter: Act of Congress needed to save postal service

Editor:

Working as a mail clerk, I hear people’s concerns that their letters and parcels won’t arrive on time. Some blame the U.S. Postal Service’s shortcomings on the rise of e-billing, the pandemic or that supposedly “no one wants to work.” And with USPS reporting yet another multibillion-dollar loss last quarter, we’re told that slowdowns, price hikes, and outsourcing are needed to keep us profitable.

But I didn’t become a postal worker to make anyone a profit; I did it to serve you the people. Everyone has the right to prompt, reliable and efficient mail delivery whether it’s profitable or not, but our leaders at USPS and in Congress don’t seem to take your rights seriously.

What’s worse, Congress has manufactured a financial crisis at USPS with its 75-year pension pre-funding mandate, a ridiculous standard no other institution is expected to meet.

With corrupt, incompetent leaders like Postmaster General Louis DeJoy and Chairman Ron Bloom at the helm of USPS, it’s hard to know where to turn for guidance.

Luckily the American Postal Workers Union has helped build a grand alliance to save our public postal service, and we are pushing for Congress to take up the Postal Service Reform Act of 2021 immediately.

This popular legislation would end the pre-funding mandate, integrate Medicare benefits for postal retirees, bolster delivery standards and increase transparency in postal management.

Let’s tell our representatives to pass the Postal Service Reform Act, dump DeJoy and ensure the future of the people’s service.
