Letter: America needs to lose its taste for snake oil

Editor:

Reading the letters to the editor offers a daily adventure. Recently, the usual representatives of the lunatic fringe have been augmented by new writers, most of whom appear to possess a functioning brain. This is a refreshing trend.

Without doubt, Reading affords chances to immerse oneself in idiocy. Mehmet Oz, master of snake oil, started to till our soil late last year. Droves of our citizens, apparently purchasers of his miracle products, seem poised to vote for him. We will find his political promises as empty as his “amazing secret medical” balderdash.

For longtime Republicans such as myself, the big lie from the liar-in-chief, augmented by Oz’s glib mischaracterizations of truth, brings on nausea. We become dizzy with disbelief.

The opportunity for trenchant graphic commentary in the political cartoon unfortunately often gets squandered in favor of additional bald-faced lies.

Naturally, foolishness saturates our national scene. The Food and Drug Administration, for instance, announced it will need even more years to produce a formula to control narcotic abuse. The government presents the problem as thorny. It is not. The fault lies with the citizens: We buy the stuff. Let us hope, come election day, we will not buy any snake oil.
