Letter: Celebrating human worth at Roe v. Wade anniversary

Editor:

Jan. 23 is Sanctity of Human Life Sunday, part of a monthlong recognition of the value of life in the womb. It is held close to the date of Jan. 22, 1973, when the Supreme Court ruled in Roe v. Wade that abortion on demand is legal.

Why do Bible-believing, born-again Christians, among many others, oppose abortion so strongly? There is no Bible verse that says, “Thou shalt not have an abortion.” But the Scriptures make clear that every human being, from the moment of conception, is a direct creation of almighty God and therefore has worth and value.

We don’t believe that we are just some chance meeting of sperm and egg. Rather, God oversees the whole process from conception to development in the womb to our birth. Everything that is characteristic of us — from the color of our eyes, to our gender, to the color of our skin, to our size and shape, is a part of God’s plan for us. We are his masterpieces, and to take the life of a child in the womb is to destroy one of God’s works of art. It is horrifying to even think of such an act.

Sanctity of Human Life Sunday is our way of celebrating our human worth and value from conception to the grave. It is also our way of mourning the millions of lives that have been snuffed out through abortion. Our prayer is that this monstrous evil may someday soon come to an end.
