Letter: Columnist right about Philadelphia Columbus statue

Editor:

“A great victory over intolerance,” Christine Flowers’ Dec. 22 commentary about Philadelphia’s shameful treatment of the statue of Christopher Columbus was excellent. Philadelphia Democratic Mayor Jim Kenney wasted taxpayers’ money by not standing up to some malcontents who hate American history and were demanding the statue’s removal. But Kenney had a better idea. He had a box built to hide the statue. That, of course, satisfied no one except the mayor. Hiding a public statue to placate some ignorant rioters who shout “racist” at anyone who disagrees with them is one of the most moronic ideas ever conceived, even by Democratic mayoral standards. A judge ordered the box removed. The statue stays.

The money wasted on this stunt did not save one person from being murdered, did not save one child from being shot by a street thug, did not put a roof over the head of a single homeless person, and did not provide a single meal for a hungry Philadelphian. Can anyone point out exactly what Kenney’s actions accomplished? Or better yet, explain why, in spite of this demonstration of incompetence, Philadelphians will probably elect a Democratic mayor again in 2023.
