Letter: Congresswoman must do more to address economy

Editor:

I was so disappointed with “Houlahan holds fourth ‘State of the 6th’” (Reading Eagle, Jan. 29). It used to be that our representatives would seek to address or solve “kitchen table issues” of their constituents; things that people discuss every evening.

In today’s economy that would include the fact that diesel fuel, gasoline, and home heating costs are straining the household budgets of everyone. Diesel costs result in significant increases in prices at the grocery store, gas is approaching $4 per gallon again, and home heating oil is at about $700 for a delivery.

The article on U.S. Rep. Chrissy Houlahan’s presentation made no mention of these issues that affect all of us on a daily basis. It did mention that she is a Democratic member of the Problem Solvers Caucus, which requires members to attend its meetings with someone from the opposite party.

Since U.S. Rep. Dan Meuser is a Republican and another member of the Problem Solvers Caucus who represents part of Berks County, I suggest they jointly introduce bipartisan legislation to solve the problem of rising fuel costs on behalf of their Berks constituents. Let’s see if the “Problem Solvers” can address a continuing problem that we all are facing.
