Letter: Controversy over books shows need to do better

Editor:

As a fellow Kutztown High School graduate, I thank Robin Gow for writing “Right books in schools can help LGBTQ youth” (Reading Eagle, Nov. 10).

Censorship, racism, prejudice and discrimination should have no place in our society. In 1985, the prize winners for the Halloween dance at Kutztown High were students dressed as members of the Ku Klux Klan. At that time, KKK members recently had been arrested for acts against immigrants from Vietnam. And when was the KKK ever amusing? This was decided by teacher vote. My editorial commentary caused issues. I certainly thought we would be doing better by now.

Endemic racism, sexual identity flexibility and science are real. Deal with it. When your kids go to a good college or trade school or job, they will be expected to treat others as they would like to be treated.

Thanks again, Robin. I hope we can do better.
