The March 2 Reading Eagle had a commentary (“Question for Republicans: How big a check for Ukraine”) and a letter (“Only makers of weapons benefit from Ukraine war”) that incorrectly stated that Ukraine has a blank check and that it somehow chose the war.
No, the Ukrainians didn’t ask for and don’t get a blank check. What they ask for and receive are arms. They have also gotten aid in dollars for specific humanitarian needs as we give to many other countries. That’s certainly appropriate given that Ukraine is being attacked by Russia.
Note that in the U.S. legislation providing aid to Ukraine, part of the money is used to provide American forces with replacement of the arms donated to Ukraine.
No, Ukraine didn’t ask to be invaded. In fact Russia guaranteed the sovereignty of Ukraine many times from 1994 on. Russia invaded in 2014 and agreed again it would guarantee Ukrainian sovereignty. Its most recent invasion is a violation of international law, Russia has been accused of war crimes. Like an abusive spouse, it was enraged that Ukraine wanted to be independent.
For its money the United States helps to stop Russian aggression and sees one of its long-running threats severely weakened militarily with no U.S. troops involved and a small percentage of the defense budget. It’s morally and strategically the right thing to do.
