Letter: Fraud taking terrible toll on many unemployed

Editor:

People need to be informed regarding the rampant fraud and identity theft within the Pennsylvania unemployment system.

Having lost my job due to the COVID-19 shutdown, I applied for unemployment compensation benefits (which I worked for and contributed to for more than 30 years). However, after completing the required registration for ID.me, my UC account was hacked.

I am one of the many Pennsylvanians who have been victimized and, as a result, had several weeks of unemployment payments diverted into a fraudulent account established by hackers.

I’ve been told it could take more than six months to investigate, and hopefully resolve, my fraud claim. Why must this take so long? Not everyone will be able to survive that long without the funds that were stolen from them. (And before anyone says it, I am working now, but don’t let anyone tell you it’s easy to “just get another job.” It’s not as easy as they seem to think. But that’s another story in itself.)

People need to hear the stories of the many families in Berks County, and across Pennsylvania, who have been victimized and are experiencing serious financial jeopardy. Why are we not hearing concern and outrage from our state and local representatives?

Let’s hear from other Berks Countians and spark some action. We did not ask to lose our jobs, and we deserve the financial benefits we earned.
