Letter: Game commission focused on wrong priorities

Editor:

I gag whenever I hear from a hiker that the Pennsylvania Game Commission is a “conservation partner.” The local destruction of the forests on the top of Blue Mountain by the PGC and the Bureau of Forestry has annihilated the last reason we have to live in Berks County and Pennsylvania in general.

Since 2016 our connections to the area have been stretched to the breaking point. The ongoing destruction of the local forests where we walk has shattered the last remaining tie.

What I see is the ineptitude I expect of a National Rifle Association-dominated organization, hucksters pushing an out-of-touch organization. Pheasant stocking, mourning dove shooting alleys and promoting the murder of coyotes are among the issues that have alienated us.

The PGC must bring its mission statement into alignment with the state constitution. It needs to change its focus from an almost extinct customer base to the clear reality that there are many more hikers than hunters.
We are looking to move to another state where hiking and natural resources are valued more than hunting and supporting bloated organizations.
