Letter: Houlahan misguided on war in Gaza

Editor:

On Feb. 15, my congresswoman, U.S. Rep. Chrissy Houlahan, issued a statement on the Israel-Hamas war. While I am sure her intentions are noble, they are flawed.

“I am deeply concerned with Prime Minister (Benjamin) Netanyahu’s current stated intention to move the conflict to Rafah with no apparent realistic or feasible plan to protect the innocent civilian lives who shelter there,” the statement read. “He and his administration have not previously demonstrated the restraint that gives me any confidence that this would be an exception from past incursions.”

Are you kidding me? Who uses human civilian shields to wage war? Who viciously attacked, raped, beheaded and burned people alive on Oct. 7? Not the Israelis.

The statement went on: “I believe the Israeli government and Hamas should pursue lasting peace through a negotiated ceasefire …” What lasting peace? Warring has existed in that corner of the world for 4,000 years from the Babylonian through the Ottoman empires until now.

“I also urge the United States to work to ensure that the possibility of a two-state solution is preserved,” the statement said.

A two-state solution solves nothing. When one side chants “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free”, how do you achieve a compromise with that? If Hamas lays down its weapons, there would be peace. If Israel lays down its weapons, it will be annihilated.

Who is the U.S. to tell Israel how to fight its war of survival? Houlahan should worry more about securing America’s borders.
