This is in response to “Mask opt-out bill for Pa. students advances” (Reading Eagle, Sept. 29). I am shocked and depressed by the direction the Republican Party is taking us and that the state Senate committee isn’t deluged with protests.
Pennsylvania has had more than 29,000 COVID-19 deaths. In Berks County there have been more than 54,000 COVID cases and more than 1,000 deaths. How is this bill justified? Will action by citizens protesting this bill only be taken when a loved one is lost?
I have already lost a dear cousin because he refused the vaccine. He and his wife got COVID. She had just one dose of the vaccine and walked out of the hospital. He didn’t, and he died.
Passage of this measure would endanger students and particularly teachers who may opt out of working. This bill is about garnering votes and not about parental “rights.” Children have a great ability to adapt. This bill is irresponsible, and the children should be able to depend on adults to protect them.
Let’s hope that common sense prevails.
