Letter: New Berks commissioner should focus on prison

Editor:

Your coverage of Berks County Commissioner Lucine Sihelnik’s swearing in mentioned two areas of interest: economic development and agricultural issues in the county (“Commissioner takes the oath of office,” Reading Eagle, Feb. 22).

I would like to remind Sihelnik that a big part of her predecessor Commissioner Kevin Barnhardt’s position centered around inmates at the county jail. I encourage her to consider including these inmates in her plans for agriculture and economic growth. If we care about our inmates, God will bless our harvest. Many of us know an inmate who has a sharp mind for creativity and hard work.

I urge the new commissioners to keep the prison at the center of all decisions. Her 10 months in office as commissioner are critical for prison reform and development.
