Letter: Pennsylvania’s economy depends on boosting child care

Editor:

The child care industry is facing some huge challenges. Think about our economy and how many families utilize the child care industry. Our families want quality care that enables their children to learn, grow, and explore the world around them, knowing that when it’s time for school they will be ready.

Parents go to great lengths seeking options and take into consideration travel time, transportation and staff turnover. Child care facilities have waiting lists due to being short-staffed. Most accept subsidy families or are part of PA Counts, which sends children for free.

Our industry needs help to sustain a living wage now and for the long term. Without staff we are unable to help families in need. We cannot compete with the wages of larger businesses. Recently, we were able to share our staffing concerns with Rep. Mark Rozzi and how he and his constituents could help strengthen our children’s education.
