Letter: Put today’s problems into the proper context

Editor:

I see that President Joe Biden’s approval rating is very low. When considering inflation, I would suggest people search online for “1970-1980 inflation and interest rates.” Back then I paid a 9.75% interest rate on my mortgage. The conditions were much worse than today with inflation rates as high as 12.3%.

One of the things the Biden administration did to help increase inflation was to give us stimulus checks. Economists said this helped fuel inflation along with the disruption of the supply chain due to COVID-19. I did not blame past presidents for 1970s inflation, and I’m not going to blame Biden now.

Inflation has cooled off, interest rates are coming down and the job market is strong. There was record travel and strong sales over the holidays. The stock market is doing well. Consumers are still spending.

As for immigration, Congress is responsible for making laws. The immigrants coming to our southern border are traveling hundreds of miles to get there, so we are aware weeks before they arrive. I am glad to see U.S. officials have met with Mexican leaders to see if they can help alleviate the flow of immigrants. Our government must work to stop thousands of immigrants coming through Mexico to our southern borders.

I believe I am better off today than I was four years ago. I pay attention to my spending habits. America doesn’t need to be great again, America is great. We are a selfish society, never happy with what we have.
