Letter: State lawmaker wrong about gas prices

Editor:

In “Grinding gears” (Reading Eagle, June 3), state Rep. Tim Twardzik said gas prices are an issue of supply and demand. That statement is correct, but he is incorrect in his call to “drill more, fill more.” He’s also incorrect that there is nothing the Legislature can do to alleviate higher gas prices by rescinding the tax on fuel.

There are 15 fewer oil refineries in the United States than there were six years ago. They are operating at full capacity, so even if more oil were made available they do not have the capability to produce more gasoline. If there’s a hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico, gas prices would increase substantially since a lot of the refiners would shut down along the coast.

A Pennsylvania representative makes a typical statement that there’s nothing we can do to address the gas prices. I beg to differ.
