Shillington, PA native Erich Cawalla makes a very busy living as a bandleader, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, educator, booking agent, and recording artist. He has performed at almost 5,000 shows in all types of settings and shows no signs of slowing down in maintaining this rigorous schedule. Besides cover music, Erich has been releasing original songs/albums since 2008 as the leader of the popular Regional Band, The Uptown Band.
Cawalla has shared the stage with an array of celebrities, including Jeff Dunham, Marie Osmond, The Skyliners, Martha and the Vandellas, The Blue Notes, Bill Haley’s Comets, The Earls, and Sonny Turner. As bandleader of The Uptown Band since 2006, he has released two full-length albums that received critical acclaim and charted on numerous national radio charts. His song, “Waiting for Her,” appeared on Music Choice on National TV.
In 2022, Cawalla released his solo debut full-length original album entitled “The Great American Songbook” in tribute to some of his idols, including Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Smokey Robinson, and Bobby Darin. Songs from this album continue to receive radio airplay throughout the world. He has always been an “Old Soul” and walked into his producer’s (Bennie Sims) recording studio in late 2024 wanting to create a unique song featuring only himself to pay homage to the street-corner sound that has always been a big part of his performances. It was truly meant to be something fun, just for Erich. A few hours later and a song called “DooWoppin” was fully created, which features Cawalla on all vocal parts, including bass to high falsetto, tenor saxophone, and the all-important hand snaps that were so prevalent in ’50s style Doo-Wop songs. This song was released independently on Sunday, April 20.
On a whim in May, Cawalla decided to contact the legendary “Cool Bobby B” (a.k.a. Robert Backman) on Facebook Messenger, and within less than an hour, Backman said he liked the song and would be including it on an upcoming show — just like that, Cawalla’s life felt like it changed. This moment instantaneously changed Cawalla’s world as he had tried for over 15 years via radio promoters and his own promotion to land a coveted spot with a spin on Sirius XM Satellite Radio. It has truly been a dream for him and every Independent artist. That dream will be realized this Sunday night between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. EST as Cawalla’s song “DooWoppin” will be spun on “Cool Bobby B’s Doo-Wop Stop” on the 50s on 5 Channel on Sirius XM (Channel 72). He will be volunteering at his local Greater Governor Mifflin League Community Days at this exact time on Sunday night, but will be sure to make his way to his car between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. to hear and video this dream fulfilled first-hand. He is extremely appreciative of Cool Bobby B and looks forward to this special moment in his professional and personal life.
