Morgantown native wins Modern Country Vocalist of the Year at Josie Music Awards in Tennessee

Country artist Sam Schmidthuber, a Morgantown native and Lancaster County resident, won Modern Country Vocalist of the Year at the 2021 Josie Music Awards, held at the Country Tonight Theatre in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., the weekend of Sept. 17.

“It feels good to be recognized by such a well-respected award show,” said Sam, a local 2019 high school graduate. “I sing what I live.”

The 2021 Josie Music Awards received more than 38,000 submissions for nominations and only 2.6% of those submissions received a nomination.

The Josie Music Awards is an all-genre award ceremony for independent artists only, featuring a pre-party and a lavish red carpet event with live interviews and photographers recording the event. Since its inauguration in 2015, the Josie Music Awards was and remains the largest award show focused on independent artists around the globe.

The 2021 event featured a vocal competition and a songwriting session where artists, including Sam, co-wrote a song together for later release.

Sam’s journey as a country artist began during his youth.

“I started singing when I was young and taught myself to play guitar. I performed anywhere I could,” said Sam. “I won a talent show for my vocals at the Pennsylvania Farm Show back in 2016 which I credit for giving me that extra push to jump start my career.  I started writing my own songs and performing in Nashville and here we are.”

He credits hard work and loving what he does for helping him to achieve his goals in the music industry.

Sam continues to perform locally, including at the Hay Creek Festival on Sept. 11.
